About Mutton Bustin’

Where did the term “mutton busting” come from? Mutton is another term for sheep and busting is a term meaning to turn an animal into a beast of burden. It was modeled after the term bronco busting.

What exactly is mutton bustin’? During the event, a sheep is held still, either in a small chute or by an adult handler while a child is placed on top in a riding position. Once the child is seated atop the sheep, the sheep is released and starts to run in an attempt to get the child off and to reach another sheep being held in the middle of the arena.
